Europa compró en 2024 una cantidad récord de GNL a Rusia

La UE ha reducido drásticamente sus enormes importaciones de gas ruso transportado por gasoductos desde el inicio del conflicto en Ucrania, pero cada vez compra más cargamentos de GNL a varios países, entre ellos Rusia.

En 2024, Europa compró una cantidad récord de gas natural licuado (GNL) a Rusia pese a los esfuerzos de la Unión Europea por deshacerse de los combustibles fósiles procedentes de ese país, informa The Guardian.

Se trata de 17,8 millones de toneladas de GNL ruso, más de 2 millones que un año antes, según revela un estudio realizado por la compañía de investigación energética Rystad Energy, con sede en Noruega. Jan-Eric Fähnrich, experto de la empresa, detalló que los países europeos recibieron 49.500 millones de metros cúbicos de gas ruso a través de gasoductos y otros 24.200 millones de metros cúbicos transportados en buques. Parte del GNL fue revendido a otras naciones, añadió.

Los datos del Centro de Investigación sobre Energía y Aire Limpio (Crea), cuyas cifras difieren ligeramente de las de Rystad, indican que las importaciones de la UE de GNL ruso ascendieron a 7.320 millones de euros en 2024. El aumento interanual del volumen fue del 14 %, lo que situó las importaciones en 17,5 millones de toneladas.

Ucrania no prorrogó el contrato de tránsito de gas ruso por su territorio que expiró el 31 de diciembre. De este modo, el suministro de hidrocarburo procedente de Rusia hacia los países europeos por Ucrania quedó suspendido desde el 1 de enero.
El presidente ruso, Vladímir Putin, dijo que Kiev "está castigando a Europa con el cierre del contrato de tránsito para el suministro de gas a Europa".
