Capibaras, armas y drogas: Policía de Costa Rica frustra operativo de tráfico ilegal sorprendente

Es el primer caso registrado en Costa Rica de comercio ilícito de capibaras, una especie no nativa del país.

El Ministerio de Seguridad Pública de Costa Rica informó el jueves en un comunicado que la Policía había rescatado a cinco capibaras -un macho, una hembra y tres crías- transportadas por dos hombres "con amplio historial delictivo".

"La Fuerza Pública interceptó en un control de carretera en Orotina un vehículo que transportaba ilegalmente cinco capibaras –una especie silvestre exótica– junto con drogas, armas blancas y espuelas plásticas", reza un mensaje del organismo. Los agentes incautaron 60 dosis de 'crack' y una cantidad indeterminada de marihuana.

"Es el primer caso registrado en Costa Rica de tráfico ilegal de capibaras, lo que marca un hito en la lucha contra el comercio ilícito de fauna silvestre", agrega.

Entre los antecedentes judiciales y policiales de los implicados se encuentran la venta de drogas, tráfico de personas, violación, abuso sexual contra un menor de edad y delitos contra la biodiversidad.

La capibara es una especie no nativa de Costa Rica, cuyo comercialización está prohibida en el país. "Importante esta acción de nuestra Policía, que logra la detección de estas especies y nuevamente se da aquí la concurrencia de un fenómeno que se ha dado en otros países de América Latina, en donde el mundo de la droga coincide con la introducción de especies exóticas no nativas", dijo el ministro de Seguridad, Mario Zamora, en un video publicado en redes sociales. El alto funcionario detalló que los animales han sido trasladados a un centro de protección.
